Snoring Causes Distress

Despite being treated with levity in most quarters, snoring is the source of enormous distress to many hundreds of people on a nightly basis. And not only the snorer themselves suffer, but also their partners and, if the snoring is intrusive enough, sometimes even other members of the household.

Snoring is caused by the relaxation of the muscles in the mouth, nose and throat, occasionally during wakefulness, but obviously much more commonly in sleep, when the vibration of relaxed tissue causes the familiar sound. Oddly, many snorers deny that they snore, although by definition they are unlikely to know, as they tend to be asleep at the time.

Causes And Remedies For Snoring

There are numerous causes of snoring, and solving the problem starts with identifying the particular cause. Extra fat around the neck, a particular problem zone for men and for women in later life, can account for the pressure on the relaxed airways which results in snoring.

The normal relaxation of the bodys muscles can be exaggerated by the effect of alcohol on the brain, with snoring as a consequence, but alcohol has other negative contributory physical effects, such as producing congestion and irritating the nasal lining. Unfortunately, sedatives can also super-relax the muscles, so its worth asking your GP if there is an alternative which might work for you.

Naturally cigarette smoke has a very direct effect on the upper respiratory system, with distension and catarrh potential consequences. Reducing cigarette and alcohol consumption can be both physically, psychologically and socially challenging, but any reduction will give the body a chance of holding its own against these poisons, and avoiding them in the evening makes an opportunity allows the body some time to process them before sleeping.

Chin Straps As An Anti Snoring Device

More complicated or invasive Snoring Remedies are available to reduce mouth breathing which isnt solved by raising the bed head. The combination of support for the lower lip or jaw from chin straps and strips, and nasal strips to open the nostrils have been shown to be effective in some studies.

Other causes of snoring, such as allergies (common allergens are feathers, house pets, cigarette smoke and dust mites), and obstructions in the nostrils (e.g., polyps) are among the causes that are worth investigating medically. Rarely snoring again could turn out to be just one of the associated health benefits.
